In creating works for public spaces Mike has drawn from local history and natural surroundings to symbolise and compliment each environment. Public art can be a contentious area and each commission has to be sensitive to the needs, tastes and opinions of a great number of people.
Steel worker

Commissioned by Corby District Council 1989

Steelworker is a commemorative work which pays tribute to the town`s industrial heritage. It was commisioned as part of an initiaitve to improve the working and shopping environment of the town’s centre.

Norman Knight
6`4`` tall in Portland stone
Mounsorrel, Leicestershire
Commissioned by Leicestershire County Council 1992

Norman Knight began as a commision to create a work as part of the regeneration of Mounsorrel in Leicestershire. Research led to the village’s origins as a Norman stronghold. This powerful figure now stands as a guardian at the original entrance to the Norman castle site.

Wavy Seat
6` wide Hornton stone
Coventry Canal

Wavy Seat on the Coventry Canal was commissioned as part of an art trail to improve the use of this industrial landmark by Leisure users. The undulating stone seat echos the flow of water in the canal as well as providing an resting space for walkers half way through the trail.

Swan
4`6`` tall in Portland stone
Mounsorrel, Leicestershire
Commissioned by Leicestershire County Council 1992

Standing on a plinth of local granite, this swan is a reference to the river which runs close to the site.
Waterstone
8` tall Clipsham stone
Chesterfield 1997

Waterstone is clearly visible from the road as one drives through Chesterfield. It draws on the theme of ripples in water and marks the old course of the River Hipper through Cheterfield, adding soft, natural line in the middle of a built up area.
